Panorama 1999, a long overdue double cd that captures the live performances of the finalists in the National Steelpan Panorama Competition held in Trinidad and Tobago. The results are the typical excellent execution of the fourteen steelpan orchestras we have come to expect from steelpan musicians. Panorama has distinguished itself as a prolific showcase of indigenous steeelpan music as well as for the steelpan musical arrangers. A majority of the tunes are infectious and "In My House," "Toco Band" are among these. Panorama 1999 provides the pulse of the competition and reveals the innovative and spiritual harmony of arrangers as Clive Bradley, Len "Boosgie" Sharpe, Jit Samaroo, Annise Hadeed, Len "Smooth" Edwards, Andy Narell and Ken "Professor" Philmore.

The Signal Hill Alumni Choir's second CD features a repertoire of folk, contemporary, African, Reggae, Gospel, Negro Spirituals and calypso. The concert was held at the auditorium of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. Following the successful recording of last year's performance, the choir was filled with creative juices resulting in this latest release of the O'Trinidad ...Love Again series. O'Trinidad ...Love Again lyrics and melody by Ray Holman and Dennis Franklyn (The Merchant) is smooth, the choir sings with heart and soul. The Choir can be heard live this summer in Guelph Ontario.
Steelpan soloist, Rudy Smith's music continues to inspire, impress and excite those of us in who are fortunate to see him in concert and listen to his CDs. Smith has made a name for himself in the European jazz circuit and can be seen occasionally in Canada and the U.S. Smith's latest recoding was in Trinidad at the Central Bank Auditorium as part of the O'Trinidad Live concert series. Jazz standards as "Autumn Leaves" "Body and Soul" and "Bags' Groove," positions Smith in jazz right now. This fresh beebop genre spotlights his command of the instrument and keeps the pan jazz music alive.
Another accomplished steelpan solist from Trinidad, Hadeed now lives in the U.K. played with the West Indian Jazz Band and worked in places like Europe and Philadelphia. Hadeed's new album makes a name for himself as a contemporary modern jazz musician. His approach is one of spontaneity this compact disc also spotlights, Robert Bailey on acoustic piano, David "Happy" Williams acoustic bass and Richard Bailey on drums. "Hang On," "Take a Taste" and "Onx Bounce," are examples of good arranging and composition for pan jazz.
A new CD from Rudy "Two Left" Smith, Time to Move On also features three titles with the Copenhagen Steel Band. Smith, a "steelpan pioneer" is the legendary virtuoso who plays jazz with his instruments. His inspiration came from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson both strongly influencing his musical style. The CD offers eight tracks: Softly as in a morning sunrise/Ruth's Waltz/Time to Move On/My Folish Heart/Life Never Gonna be the Same Without You/You Don'r Know What Love Is/Be Bach.

In 1988, Ray was awarded the National Humming Bird Silver Medal for his outstanding contribution to steelpan. A persuasive innovator whose creativity will continue to be fiercely independent. The Carib Panjammers is a traditional pan around the neck steel orchestra from Santa Cruz, Trinidad. This CD was recorded with a Pacific Microsonics Digital Signal Processor that produces a transparent sound stage when played on a high resolution system. The CD provides a range of 15 selections of calypso, Latin, and easy listening. The Exodus Steel orchestra a fairly "new" steel orchestra, formed in 1981 comes from St Augustine, Trinidad. This recording used a Pacific Microsonics High Definition Compatible Digital recording process that removes harsh sound, that are found in conventional encoding processes. Behind The Bridge refers to the area on the lower east side of Port of Spain, Trinidad. This neighbourhood was home to the Orisha religion, culture and drumming which flourished despite being banned by the British and a century later was one of the birth places of the steelpan. The title says it all. Paquito D'Rivera is back with a strong collection of Latin Love songs. D'Rivera opens with a famous Argentine tango, "La Morocha" a track that breaks into a wonderfully engulfing set of Chilean, Colombian, Cuban, Dominican, Brazilian, Puerto Rican and Mexican, compositions. "Corcovado," "Ay Ay Ay," "Acercate Mas," "Amor Sin Esperanza" and "Corazon Partio" are completely inspiring. The icon in the world of Latin jazz takes turns on clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone. This is a collection of mature genres as vallenato, merengue, bossa nova, and the more recent salsa.
